Labyrinth (2005)

From the CD booklet notes: Some time ago, I discovered the St. Gerold Provostry in the Great Walser Valley in Vorarlberg. Although located in Austria, not far from Zurich, my domicile, it became an ideal place for my work. Over the past two years, most of my compositions have been created there, including all four of the recordings presented here. „Labyrinth“ for string orchestra, composed in the summer of 2004, is perhaps the work most atmospherically connected to the location. From the Provostry, a path leads into the nearby forest, where one suddenly and unexpectedly encounters a labyrinth. A labyrinth is not, as often assumed, a maze, but rather a winding path leading to the center, thus symbolizing the fateful journey of human life. Inspired by this symbol, the idea came to me to compose a musical labyrinth; a thematically and harmonically intertwined path towards a musical center and the journey back to the beginning. The center in my „Labyrinth“ is reached after a dramatic accent, quite precisely in the middle of the piece. A melodic motif, which appears at the very beginning in the first violin, is guided through various states throughout the piece. At times driven dramatically, then again merging in calm, elegiac waves, it symbolizes the often convoluted life path of humanity. „Labyrinth“ was written with a view to the 2005 USA tour of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and commissioned by Dolf Teuscher. The work is dedicated to him.
